Mammals on Libby Hill

Below is a listing of species seen on Libby Hill.  You can help by posting a sighting to us or send a photo.

Species Location Special Notes
White tailed Deer All over, highest concentration is in hemlock groves by Harold Libbey and Outback trails Deer trails run parallel to the the Libby Hill ridge line to Thayer brook
Porcupines Steep Banks south of Whale Rock on Harold Libbey Trail.  Look for porcupine droppings outside of large rocks on the steep bank.  Porcupines also live under Porcupine rock on the Outback trail. Look up trees where you see small swigs laying on the ground.  They often are high up in the trees.
Rabbits Seen near the pine thickets off Moose Odyssey trail where it crosses Old Libbey Hill Road. Easiest to see if you are looking uphill. 
Gray Squirrels Holmquist hollow and oak forest south of Moose Odyssey near the Middle School.  
Coyote South of Old Libby Hill Road, especially on the Outback and Harold Libbey trails. Look for dog like tracks that have no human footprints nearby.
Chipmunks Softwood forests Listen for high pitch chirps.
Red Squirrels Top of hill (all trails) near pine or hemlock groves. Watch for pine cone remains under trees.
Beaver Thayer Brook between Outback and Harold Libbey Trail. Observe the brook from the high overlook above on the Harold Libbey Trail.
Voles Pine groves on top of hill by Moose Odyssey Trail Watch for small tracks and movements  on the snow.

Skunk Near Middle School Please submit a sighting if you see one!
Moose Outback trail and Moose Odyssey trail near middle school. Look for moose scat (droppings) which are the size of marbles and for footprints in mud
