GCE obtains $3,000 Grant from Margaret Burnham Charitable
Trust!
Dec. 31, 2009 - Gray Community Endowment (GCE) is
pleased to announce the receipt of a $3,000 grant from the
Margaret E. Burnham
Charitable Trust to support the Save Libby Hill campaign. "The Trust
received 125 applications, which together requested far more in grants than
the funds they had available," notes Anne Gass, GCE Secretary, "so we're
thrilled to be one of the groups it chose to support." (read more)
Since March 2008 GCE has been raising money to
pay off a zero interest, $160,000 loan from local socially responsible
investors that allowed the purchase of 29 acres of land on Libby Hill from
Hancock Land Corp. The land purchase, which was also supported by a grant from
the Land for Maine's Future Board, secured the land for conservation and
recreational use. Before GCE purchased it Hancock Land had attempted to sell
the 29 acre parcel to a residential developer who planned to build seven
high-end homes there. Along with generous contributions from private
individuals in the last months of 2009, the grant from the Margaret E. Burnham
Charitable Trust brings the total funds raised for the Save Libby Hill
Campaign to $146,397; less than $14,000 more is required to pay off the loan!
