Friends of Libby Hill

Friends of Libby Hill is a group of volunteers who seek to help with a wide variety of projects on Libby Hill Forest Trails.  This group which assists the Gray Community Endowment improve it's Libby Hill Trail system has existed informally for years and sprung from the original Libby Hill Trails committee started in 1999.  This year, we decided to formalize the organization to better communicate and coordinate volunteer efforts.  Whether you can contribute an hour or 100's of hours, we want you to become a 'friend' of Libby Hill Trails. You can attend a meeting or if you prefer contact us directly (call Steve McPike 657-2114, or email libbyhilltrails@gmail.com ) to get involved with the trails. 

So if you looking to find a fun, local, civic organization with a minimum  of indoor committee time, Friends of Libby Hill Trails is for you!

Here is a sampling of the the types of volunteer opportunities that are available:

Volunteer Possibilities at Libby Hill Trails 

Trail Maintenance Days

½ day trail repair and construction work bees, occurs few days a year, volunteers contacted a week or so in advance

Adopt A trail Program (Trail Steward)

Requires adoption of a trail to check conditions monthly and report online

Booth Promotion

We have a few opportunities to have a promotional booth about Libby Hill.  Folks need to give out information and ‘sell’ the hill.  Shifts are 2-3 hours.

Event Coordination

Help find or coordinate one our many events on Libby Hill.  Requires a few hours of work depending on the nature of the event.  This is our most critical role for volunteers.

Follow up and get the DOT to place a "Libby Hill Trails" official sign on Route 26

 

Grant Application

We can always use help applying for grants.

Bridge Construction

Create or coordinate construction of 2 bridges at Thayer brook and one of its tributaries

 

You Tube Video of Trails

Create a video(s) (or work with the local cable channel)that could be translated to mp4 format and posted to Youtube where we can have our own 'channel'

Trail Signs

We have signs from Pineland that could be used to make Trail Markers with Trail names, we need to find someone who can use a router with a stencil system

Historical Research

Continue research on early 1800s farming in Gray and do research with Historical Society on Libby Hill, posting research on web site and maybe a sign at the old homestead.  Increase information on website.

Writers

·        Find some new trail bloggers to add creative content

·         Add an entry to Wikipedia about Libby Hill

·         Add content to web page

·         Create brochure for Libby Hill

 

Tree and Plant Identification

Create an enhanced plant identification map beyond or tree ID signs with links to info areas on the web

 

Photography

Add some photos to Google Earth for Libby Hill

 

Carpentry

·        Make weatherproof sign holder at parking kiosk

·        Shingle kiosk roofs

 

Fund Raising

Add donation ‘pole’ to parking lot

Create donation levels for trail users

 

Brochure and Map Distribution

Find new venues to post maps or leave brochures for Libby Hill.

Event help

We need folks to work the day of and to help plan the following:

·         Wildflower/Stonewall/Tree Id Day

·         Mountain Bike Day

·         Community Evening Walks
