The Gray Community Endowment…
Making Gray a Better Place to Live!
GCE was formed in 2001 to seek and direct charitable donations to benefit the
people of Gray. It is an independent, tax-exempt organization with an
all-volunteer board drawn from the community. We are committed to making Gray a
better place to live through investing in recreational facilities, the arts, and
education. We can support efforts sponsored by other groups or help to develop
new opportunities when needed.
Our first major project has been the preservation
and expansion of the Libby Hill trail network behind the Gray-New Gloucester
Middle School. Successes include:
- Obtaining 45 acres on Libby Hill through the Libbey
family donation. This is adjacent to the Libby Hill Forest owned by the town
of Gray.
- Winning a $5,995 “Project Canopy” grant from the Maine
Forest Service. This grant paid for a forest management plan for the Libbey
parcel. It also allowed us to hire an internationally known Nordic ski trail
design consultant to lay out the new trails;
- Coordinating volunteer efforts over many weekends to
build the trails, produce new signage, and design and build the Harold T.
Libbey Memorial Trail Head site;
- Establishing a partnership with the town of Gray and SAD
15 to maintain the Libby Hill trails;
- Helping to create the “Friends of Libby Hill” group to
recruit and manage volunteers to manage the trails;
- Working with Hancock Land Management to get permanent
access to their 26 acre parcel, on which a good chunk of the original Libby
Hill trail network is located. (Negotiations are still in process but we
believe we are nearing an agreement).
